Demographic And Clinical Characteristics Of Migraine Patients In Konya

Migraine is a frequent headache disorder in the population. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to document demografic and clinical features of subjects with migraine headache who admitted to the outpatient department of a university hospital in Konya. The study included 206 patients diagnosed as migraine according to the 2004 International Headache Society criteria and 218 healty controls of identical sex, age, marital status and education level who did not suffer from frequent headaches other than tension type with a frequency of not more than once a month. Using a questionnaire, we evaluated patient demographics, characteristics of migraine headache, family history and associated symptoms in 206 migraine pattients. 173 woman and 33 men were evaluated. The male:female ratios of migraine patients were 1:5. The mean age at consultation was 37.02±10.40 years. Of the 206 patients, 64.4% met criteria for migraine without aura, while 35.4% met criteria for migraine with aura. Most of the women were of lower educational level. Approximately half of the patients had severe and more than 3 attacks per month. Attack treatment was used frequently. Result of the study confirm that migraine is a more common disorder in women with lower educational level. In additon; this article emphasizes the need for informing patients of the hazards of drug overuse.
