in this study, specimens were obtained from 65 (siıty-five) cases and the etiology of !heir ellusions have been determined. The purpose of this study was to evaluate pleural fluid to serum bilirubin con-rentration ratio for the separation of transudates from exudates and to compare thls criterion rtith Light's criteria. When the fitting of the bilirubin con-centration ratio to the etiology is considered, values statisticaly calculated were as follows sensitivity 85 %, specifity 93 %, positive predictive value 97 %. We believe that (his criterion, which is cheap and ea-sily obtained, thus could sene as an alternative cri-terion for the seperation of transudates from exudates.
