Obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS) is a reason of hypercapnic respiratory failure (HRF) and early death. In this study, the laboratory and clinical characteristics of 29 female patients who did not have obstructive pulmonary disease and admitted to pulmonary medicine intensive care unit due to HRF were evaluated. The mean age of the patients was 63.6±17.3 and polysomnography was applied to all of them. The mean body mass index (BMI) of the cases was 41.7±9.4. According o all night polysomnography the mean apnea-hypopnea index was 38.8±29.1, arousal index was 34.6±26.1 and the mean night saturation was 66.5±8.8. BIPAP/CPAP was given to 23 of 29 cases to use at home. The BIPAP titration of the patients demonstrated a mean IPAP of 15.1±1.3 cmH2 O and a mean EPAP pressure of 8.25±1.6 cmH2 O. In conclusion, it was observed that NIV is a therapy that decreases the morbidity and mortality in cases with OSH.
