The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of allergy in patients with nasal polyposis. The study included 100 patients with nasal polyposis and 50 healthy individuals. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Selcuk University Meram Medical Faculty and written informed consent was obtained in all cases. Patients were divided into 3 groups. The first group consisted of patients with asthma and aspirin intolerance; second group consisted of patients with only asthma, third group consisted of patients have no disease. Polyp size by Physical examination, computed tomography (CT) and endoscopic scores, skin-prick test results, blood total eosinophil count, serum levels of total immunoglobulin E and symptom scores were analyzed in 100 patients with nasal polyposis. The results were compared between patients with nasal polyposis and healthy individuals. Prick test results were positive on 42% (n;42) of the patients and 22% (n;11) of the control group. While serum total IgE values of 45% (n;45) of NP patients were higher than the accepted value, serum eosinophil values of 27% (n;27) of the patients were higher than the accepted values. As serum total IgE values of 30% (n;15) of control group were higher than the accepted value, serum eosinophil values of 12% (n;6) of them were higher than accepted value. The values of the serum total eosinophil count and positive prick test results were higher in patients with nasal polyposis than in healty individuals. This result shows that allergy is a important factor on etiopathogenesis of nasal polyposis.
