The effectiveness of ultrasonography which is used for routine determination of postvoiding residual urine volüme was compared vvith transurethral catheterization. İn 58 male patients who had prostate disease and bladder emp- tying difficulty, pre-postvoiding bladder volumes vvere measured ultrasonographically using Simpson’s method (iti 6 x W x D x H). After ultrasonographic examination, residual urine volüme was determined by postvoiding 10F catheterization. Postvoid residual bladder urine volumes measured by ultrasonography and transurethral cat heterization vvere between 0-367 mİ (mean 62.2) and 0-500 mİ (mean 70.7) respectively. A high correlation was demostrated betvveen the catheterized volüme and ultrasound estimation. There was no statistically significant dif- ference betvveen them. Ultrasonography is a noninvasive. practical method vvithout a complication risk and an ef- fective method to evaluate bladder and prostate morphology. Catheterization has risk of urinary infection and urethral stricture secondary to the procedure, also this is an invasive method. l/Ve think that bladder ult rasonography techniçue, vvhich does not carry the risk of urinary tract infection or trauma must be preferred in ac- curate determination of postvoiding residual urine volüme.
