Cavitary Lung Diseases: A Retrospective Analysis of 204 Patients

Patients with cavitary lung lesions have a high ris of morbidity and mortality with prolonged hospitalization. In this study 204 patients who were treated in Selcuk University, Chest Diseases and Thoracic Surgery departments between 1995-2003, are examined retrospectively. There were 142 (70%) men and 62 (30%) women aged from 6 to 77. Definite diagnosis was established by the presence of cavitary lung lesion in chest x ray or CT. Variable of age, sex, etiology and type of treatment, were analyzed. The most common cause of cavitary lesion was tuberculosis (36%). There were 114 (56%) right caviation, 74 (%36) left and 16 (8%) bilateral cavitation 59 (29%) cases were treated by a surgery, while 145 (%71) were treated by medical treatment and observation. Six cases were died due to respiratory failure
