High-density lipoproteins (HDL) have preventive effects from developing atherosclerosis (11, 13, 24). In order to investigate the effects of long-term drugs nifedipine and propranolol on HDL cholesterol concentrations in the treatment of CHD and hypertension, 20 patients who were given nifedipine, 20 patients who were given propranolol and 20 healthy controls were studied. Serum HDL cholesterol concentrations were lower in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) than in the control group (P <0.05). There was a significant decrease in HDL cholesterol levels in the propranolol group (P <0.01), but no change in those given nifedipine. Total cholesterol values did not differ significantly, and there was no change with drug intake. Total / HDL cholesterol ratio increased in those given propranolol, but did not change in those given nifedipia. We concluded that administration of propranolol for long-term treatment of KH and hypertension reduces IIDL cholesterol levels, but administration to nifedipine did not.
