Selenium (Sc) was discovered in 1817 by Swedish scientists Jöns Jacop Berzelius and J.G. It was discovered by Gahn. It is the most toxic of trace elements (1,2). The first selenium poisoning was noticed by Marko Polo during his trip to Asia in 1295, but at that time it was not known that this poisoning was caused by Se (1). Selenium was understood to be an essential trace element only in 1957 (1,2,3).
