To determine bacteriology and antibiotic sensitivity of chronic otitis media with effusion (COME). The study group consist of 40 children with COME who had undergone miringotomy between May 2003 and January 2006. In 38 children, both of ears demonstrated effusions, whereas in two children, only one ear had effusions. Total of 78 effusion samples were cultured for bacteria and antimicrobial testing was performed for antibiotic sesitivity. Although in the 21.8% (17) of effusion samples showed bacterial growth, in the 78.2% (61) of effusion samples no showed bacterial growth. Haemophilus influenzae (29.5%) was the most common causative pathogen, followed by Streptococcus pneumoniae (17.7%), Coagulase negative staphylococcus (11.8%), Moraxella catarhalis (11.8%), Staphylococcus aereus (11.8%), Corynobacterium Spp (5.8%), Enterococcus spp (5.8%) and Lactobasil (5.8%) were isolated. Penicilin resistance was found in %64.7 of Streptococcus pneumoniae. Most of effusion samples were sterile. Therefore, the treatment of patient with COME should be recovered predisposne foctors (allergy, Eustachian Tube Dysfunction, Adenoid Hyperplasia, Gastroesophageal reflux) rather than routine antibiotic use.
