The history of contact lenses is very old. It started with Leonardo de Vinci in the 16th century for the first time, and many stages have been recorded until today. Scleral lenses were developed in 1926, corneal lenses in 1942, hydrophilic lenses in 1962 and silicone lenses in 198011i. While contact lenses were used to correct refractive defects for optical purposes, later they became used for cosmetic purposes and for the treatment of horn diseases.
