The objective of this study was to evaluate renal arteries in
living kidney candidate donors through DSA as well as compare
and contrast the findings with surgical findings. 180 kidney donor
candidates were evaluated through retrospective analysis and
findings were compared and contrasted with surgical operation notes.
DSA images of kidney donor candidates collected from the back-up
service were randomly and independently from patient credentials
examined in laboratory stations through retrospective analysis by two
experienced radiologists. According to DSA findings of 180 kidney
donor candidates, 158 donors (87,8%) were diagnosed with single
renal artery and 22 donors (12,2%) were diagnosed with multiple
renal artery while 156 donors (86,6%) were diagnosed with single
renal artery and 24 donors (13,3%) were diagnosed with multiple
renal artery according to surgical operation notes. Comparing and
contrasting DSA findings with those of surgical operation notes,
it was marked that 154 donors owned the same findings while 6
donors were diagnosed with different findings. In accordance with
these findings, our accuracy rate was 96% and our sensitivity and
specificity ratios in multiple renal artery diagnosis were measured as
83% and 98% respectively based on operation notes. It is of great
significance to evaluate left side renal arteries accurately as well as
to identify their variations in living kidney donors. DSA is regarded as
golden standard in imaging vascular structure of kidney and it proves
the pace, normal anatomy as well as variations of renal arteries
accurately and in great detail.
