Self mutilation is defined as the intentional, direct injuring of body tissue without suicidal intent. Genital self mutilation is generally associated with psychosis. Personality disorder (especially borderline personality disorder) or transsexuals make up most of the non psychotic disorders. Suicidal behavior is common among schizophrenic patients. Self mutilation is also seen with these patients and can be even resulted in death. Genital self mutilation can be given as an example. An approach to genital self mutilation cases requires cooperation of surgery and psychiatry. Important steps of the treatment are to treat early psychosis and control agitation, provide emotional and social support in surgical period, and control psychosis in the long run.
