During pregnancy, some structural changes take place in the uterus endometrium These structural changes have been characterized by remodeling and distruption of the extracellular matrix (ECM). Remodelling and distruption of uterine endometrium have importance for a successful implantation and placentation. MMPs are a group of zinc-dependent endopeptidases that degrade a variety of components of ECM and basal membrane. The activity of MMPs occurs as a result of balance between activated MMPs and their inhibitors (TIMPs). Earlier experimental studies indicated that MMPs and TIMPs have essential role in ESM destruction and remodeling while blastocyt implantation and trophoblast invasion during early pregnancy. Therefore, MMPs and TIMPs are crucial to the beginning and continuation of pregnancy.
