DEFINITION: Necrotizing enterocolit (NEC): It is a severe disease that is seen in newborns, more frequently in premature babies, has a high mortality rate, and is determined by nec-rosism in the intestines. Advances in technology and treatment have changed the problems of almost every field of perinatology in the last two decades. However, NEC has remained a constant complication of neonatal care units. Moreover, 1000 gr. or less with the survival of overly immature newborns (1). EPIDEMIOLOGY: NEC is an important cause of mortality and MOr-biditis in neonatal and especially premature intensive care units. 80-90% of the cases are babies born under 38 weeks, 75-90% of them are babies with a birth weight less than 2500 gr. About half of the babies born at term and developing NEC have low birth weight (2). While the frequency in preterms is 2-15% (3), it is 25% in babies below 1200 g (4).
