The optimal rate of growth outside of the uterus is unknown. In fact, pregnancy and lactation periods are biological continuation of each other. During pregnancy, nutrients, factors that protect against infections and factors that regulate growth pass to the fetus through the placenta, while these functions of the placenta are fulfilled through nutrition after birth.
