Postpartum Prolonged Urinary Retantion

Urinary retention is not seen frequently after vaginal delivery. Prolonged first and second stage of labor, isolated second stage prolongation, forceps or vacuum application, perianal laceration, nulliparity are risk factor for postpartum urinary retention. Urinary retention may occur immediately after labor or later days. Treatment consists of urinary catheterizing, antibiotic administration and withdrawal of the catheter at regular intervals and checking spontaneous micturition. Treatment of urinary retention is achieved when there is no residual urine is seen after spontaneous micturition. In this article we presented a postpartum urinary retention case which treated with intermittent urinary catheterization in order to draw attention about this subject.
