Neutrophil leukocytes, which have antibacterial agents and lysosom.es, play an important role in phagocytosis and destroy rnicroorganisms. They have active metabolism, because !hey are ~ille and phagocytose microorganisrnv, Principally, There are two biochernical events in phagocytosıs. First one is the acceleration of the hexose-monophosphate shunt and the second one is the generation of 11202 in phagocytosis the energy reguirement, oxygen consumption, and the breakdown of glucose via Etnbden-Meyerhoff patway increase. 11202 is produced as a resuit of the effect of oxidase on NADH produced in glycolysis. 11202 has killing effect on microorganis?rı. In phagoytosis respiration accelerates in the neutrophil leukocytes. This is called as respiratory burst. Respiratory burst siarts at the begining of the chernotaxis and continues tip ta the end of phagocytosis. 1mpaired 11202 production causes some infections. Because rnicroorganisms can not be effectively killed.
