Many scolicidal agents are used in surgical treat-ment of hydatid disease. The efficiency and side ef-fects of these agents are known and in this study we compared scolicidal elliciency of formol and polyvin-yl pyrolidone (PVP) in vivo and in vitro. Ilydatid liquid was obtained from sheep liver and living scolex were observed by eosin test and micro-scopically. 10% formül and PVP mixed with hydatid liquid in 10%, 20% and 50% concentrations. The vi-ability of the scolices were determined by eosin test and microscopically after 3, 5, and 10 minutes. In vivo study, we forrned 5 groups each containing 10 rats. The control group was inoculated with ,1 mi of living hydatid liquid intraperitoneally and hydatid cysts were observed in peritoneal cavity of alt rats after 8 weeks. In the study group formül and PVP were used in dijfererıt concentrations and durations. We concluded that PVP is effective as a scolicidal agent even in low concentrations but formül is not useful.
