Selective digestive decontamination in hospital infection prophylaxis

It is one of the most common and life-threatening complications in patients hospitalized in infectious intensive care units. Multiorgan failure is the most common cause of death in these patients and is mostly caused by infection (1). Studies conducted for ten years have shown that infection develops between 0/10 and 50% in these patients, depending on the type of units and the severity of the underlying disease (2,3). There is also a relationship between the duration of the head in the intensive care unit (ICU) and the risk of developing infection. It has been reported that infection occurs at a rate of 50% five days after admission to the ICU and 90% after ten days, 50-80% of these infections are caused by gram (-) bacteria and 20-40% by gram (+) bacteria ( 4.5).
