The purpose of this study is to examine the in-cidence of sleep complaints and sleep disorders in patients with medical illness. We evaluated sleep complaints and sleep disorders in 92 outpatients by using a semistructured interview form and DSM-IV diagnostic criteria. Forty patients (43.5 %) di-agnosed as sleep disorder due to a general medical condition (insomnia type). The incidence of sleep complaints varied from 29.3 % to 75 % in the pa-tients. We also examined the correlation between sleep complaints and independent variables. Age, gender. and duration of illness had significant ef-fects on the presence of sleep complaints. These fin-dings suggest that sleep complaints should be con-sidered in the assessment of the medical patients.
