The Frequency of the anemia seen in the students of Selçuk University

We aimed to investigate the frequency of the anemia seen in the students of Selçuk University in 1999-2000 educational year by this studying. 147 female and 201 male students (total 348) were chosen through the whole university students randomly to The results of this study was in accordance with literatüre as well. represent whole faculty and highschools as before determined the number of students to be investigated. Firstly complete blood count was studied. Peripheral blood smear was done to the findings of anemia. The level of serum iron, iron binding capacity, transferrin saturation, ferritin, B12, folat were established. According to these results, the whole occurance of anemia established was found İn accordance with iron deficiency. The average of red blood cells in giriş was 4,606,530±460,790/mm3, in males 5,167,810±521,256/mm3 and the average of hemoglobin in gir! was 13.8+1.3g/dl, in males 15.6±1.4 g/dl and the average of hematocrit in gir! was 40.7±4.0%, in males 45.2+4.7%. The low average in red blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit in females was found meaningfull as statistical (p<0.0001). The average of white blood cells, MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW and platalets betvveen females and males could not be able to find the meaningfull difference (p>0.05). İn our survey; anemia prevalence ratio in females 6.8%, in males 5.4%, in whole students 6.3% was found. The ratio of females/males is 1.24. Betvveen the two groups could not be able find the meaningfull difference as stastical (p>0.05). The level of serum iron low, iron binding capacity high, transferrin saturation low, serum ferritin low, peripheral blood smear results at the whole occurance of anemia established were in accordance with the iron deficiency. The level of serum B12 and folat were found in normal range.
