The meat consumption preferences and white meat consumption in Konya

Aim: İn this study, it was aimed to investigate the preference of meat consumption and the relation betvveen vvhite meat consumption and demographic characteristics of the community. Methods: This study was carried out on 467 house hold selected by using cluster sample method in the city çenter of Konya in 1997. Ali data vvere ob- tained by intervievving. İn determining meat consumption fish and poultry vvere accepted as "vvhite meat" and lamb and veal as "red meat". White meat consumption of four or more times per month was accepted as sufficient. Re- sults: The first choices in meat consumption nere meat, poultry and fish vvere 35.8%, 34.0% and 24.8% res- pectively. 43.9% of the population has consumed sufficient vvhite meat. The frequency of vvhite meat consumption vvas found to be related to family income and housevvife education level. Conclusion: İn the population, vvhite meat consumption is not at desired level. Therefore some programs to increase vvhite meat consumption should be developed.
