332 gastroscopic biopsy specimens were re-viewed in this histochemical study. The prevalance of intestinal metaplasia was 24.42%. The incidence of intestinal metaplasia in chronic gastritis, ulsers and carcinomas was 23.55%, 19.35% and 29.68% res-pectively. Intestinal metaplasia was more common in chronic atrophic gastritis (34.37%) than in chronic superficial gastritis (21.59). The prevalance of type III intestinal metaplasia in carcinomas was 70% and this higher than benign processes.
