More recently, component therapy broadened the application of transfusion therapy from blood volume support to the specific replacement of blood components. An individual component of blood such as red blood cells, platelets, plasma, or specific plasma proteins, may often be used effectively in place of whole blood. This issue describes in-dications and strategies for red cell, platelet and granulocyte transfusions.
