Where Is The Lost Thyroid? Lingual Thyroid

Thyroid ectopy is caused by failure of the descent of thyroid tissue through thyroglossal duct during embryological development. Base of the tongue is the most common ectopic localisation of thyroid gland. It is usually asympthomatic. Adenoma, hyperplasia, inflammation, malignancy similarly can be seen in ectopic thyroid tissue, as may occur in normal thyroid tissue. In this report, we present the case who has no thyroid tissue on normal localisation, searched for ectopic localisation with scintigraphycally; treated for hypothyroidism and followed.
