This prospective study was undertaken to cornpare the results of peritoneal lavage and ultrasonography in 30 patients with blunt abdorninal trauma admitted to etnergency room in two years. We performed ultrasonography and peritoneal lavage respectively. The physicians who evaluated peritoneal lavage were unaware of ultrasonographic results. Sixteen patients whose results of ultrasonography and peritoneal lavage were positive were operated on. Of 30 cases, 14 were true positive, one falso positive, 13 true negative and tıvo incleterminate in ultrasonography. There were 14 true positive tesis in ultrasonography and peritoneal lavage, equal to each other (93%). The accuracy raie of true negative patients was 86% in ultrasonography and 100% in peritoneal lavage. We believe that ultrasonography is as useful as peritoneal lavage in patients with blunt abdorninal trautn.a ı-vhen it is perfortned by experienced physicians and with new technical development in the field of ultrasonography.
