Complications of Diabetes mellitus are beleived to be resulted from altercations in insulin ho-meostasis and energy metabolism. Metabolic stress, by increasing oxidative stress causes jimctional and structural damage which results in diabetic comp-lications. The formation of free radicals as a result of an increase in oxidative tetil.ity increases in Un-controlled diabetes mellitus. In organisms, an-tioxidant defense systems are present agains harm-ful effects Of free radicals. In the present study. sermon vitamin E and ervt-hrocyte superoxide disimuase (SOD) and ght-tathione peroxidase (GSH-P.►-) activities of 33 he-alty subjects aged between 34-b6 and 57 patients with type II diabetes mellitus under treatment and aged between 35-75 nears have been investigated. Erythrocyte SOD and GSII-Px activities and serum Otani'', E level of patients were 550±200 U g 11b. 26.7±12.8 g lib and 472.6±183 ftg ill whereas these of controls were 649±165 .. gr 21.8±6.2 U gr III and 422.7±145 fig;d1 res-pectively. The difference between the parameters of the two groups were nor significiant statistically. - Since no significiant alteration was found in the activity of antioxidants. it was concluded that tre-atment of diabetes mellitus might prevent preduction of, free radicals.
