The Effect of Topical Antibiotic Prophylaxis on The Infection Risk After Hernioplaxty With Mo-nofflamented Polypropylene Meshes (Marlex).

Purpose: The aim of this study is to investigate the incidence of infection after polypropylen mesh hernioplasty and the effect of topical antibiotic prophylaxis. Instution: Ankara Numune Hostipal, 4th Su•-gical Clinic. Metarial and Methods: 75 patients operated on between May 1995- Jan 1996 for hernia were included in this study. Group 1: 25 patients were included in this group and clasical hernioplasty techniques were app-lied. Group 11:26 patients were included in this group and poloropylen mesh was used for hernia repair. Group III: 24 patients were included in this group and polypropylen mesh + npical antibiodtic propylaxis were used for hernia repair. Findings: Group I: There was no infection, but inflammatory reaction occured in two patients and Cord edema occured in one patient. Group II: There was infection in one patient (4%) and inflammatory reaction in one patient. Group 111: There was in-fection in one patient (4%) and Cord edeme in one paient.. Conclusion: We concluded that, polypropylene mesh did not increase the incidence of infection and there was no need to use topical antibiotic prophylaxis.
