1987 Yılında İngiltere'de başarılı bir invitrofertilizasyon (1VF) re embriotransferi (ET) uygulaması sonucu ilk tüp bebek dünyaya gelmiştir. Bu uygulamada tubalardaki bir patolojiye bağlı olarak çocuk sahibi olamayanlardan laporoskop ile oosit alınıp, bir kültür mediumunda kocanın spermatozoidleri ile döllendirilmektedir. Oluşan embrioya uterusa transfer edilerek normal gebelik süresi beklenmektedir
