Hidrolazlar grubunun üyeleri olan kolinesteraz-lar, asetilkolini hidrolize ederler. Birbirine yapısal yakınlığı bulunan iki önemli kolinesteraz vardır. Bunlardan biri kolinesteraz I. diğeri kolinesteraz H.dir (1,2,3). Kolinesteraz Pin sistematik adı asilkolinasetil-hidrolaz (EC 3.1.1.7), pratik adı ise asetilkolineste-raz veya spesifik kolinesterazdır. Kolinesteraz Iltnin sistematik adı asetilkolina-silhidrolaz (EC 3.1.1.8), pratik adı ise psödokoli-nesteraz benzoilkolinesteraz, nonspesifik kolines-teraz veya plazma kolinesterazdır .
