Selenyum (Sc) 1817 yılında Isveçli bilim adamlan Jöns Jacop Berzelius ile J.G. Gahn tarafından keşfedildi. Eser elementler içinde en toksik olanıdır (1,2). Ilk selenyum zehirlenmesi 1295 yılında Asya'da yaptığı seyahat esnasında Marko Polo tarafından farkedilmiş ancak o zaman bu zehirlenmenin Se'dan kaynaklandığı bilinmemişti (1). Selenyum esansiyel bir iz element oldugu ancak 1957'de anlaşılabilmiştir (1,2,3).
