Aubaniac'ın 1952'de ilk kez tanımlaması ile birlikte popüler olan subklavian venöz kateterizasyon günümüzde parenteral sıvı tedavisi, merkezi venöz basınç ölçümü ve pace-maker yerleştirilmesi amacıyla rutin olarak kullanılmaktadır. işlem, kolay uygulanabilirliği yanı sıra, teknik kurallara uyulmaması ve yeterli kontrol yapılmadığı takdirde hasta hayatını tehdit edebilen komplikasyonlara yol açabilecek bir girişim olarak görünmektedir.
